The glass block revisited The emergence of photopolymer recording materials has regenerated interest in the use of the glass block recording apparatus. Photopolymer recording materials, such as those produced by DuPont Corporation, have an index of refraction on the order of 1.49. The much closer proximity of this index (compared with silver halide emulsion at 1.63) to the glass index in our block recording setup potentially eliminates one of the culprit index mismatches that generated the woodgrain fringes. Experimentation with photopolymer using the glass block recording device has demonstrated a significant reduction in woodgrain effect. The residual woodgrain when recording with photopolymer is partially attributed to the mylar substrate which carries the photopolymer material. This substrate has a refractive index of 1.66. Use of photopolymer materials that allow removal of the mylar substrate and allow direct application of the recording material to an alternative glass plate, mitigates this last significant index mismatch in the vicinity of the recording layer. Woodgrain summary The woodgrain defect that frustrated early experimentation with edge-lit holography has been successfully mitigated through use of the immersion tank to record silver-halide emulsion holograms, and through use of the glass block to record photopolymer recording materials that have had their mylar substrates removed and replaced by glass. By logical extension, glass plate photopolymer recording insitu with the immersion tank will address both index mismatches, and produce the brightest, most efficient, woodgrain free edge-lit holograms.

Parallax panoramagrams and integral photographs significantly predate the advent of modern holography as three-dimensional imaging media Integral photograph or Fly s eye lens array photograph are terms describing 3-D displays consisting of a photographic medium and a spherical or cylindrical lenslet array placed in close proximity to the medium surface In integral photography, each small lens captures the scene from a slightly different perspective than its neighbor, and a large array of these perspective views is recorded in correspondingly small areas across the film Viewing the photo with the lenslets in place results in a simultaneous reconstruction of the array of discrete perspectives, enabling the viewer to perceive a 3-D representation due to parallax displacements for each eye.

Now that you have a general sense of what an array is, you need to know how to create one. All arrays are instances of the Array class, and as such, you can create instances using the Array constructor. There are three variations with the constructor: No parameters This option creates a new array with zero elements. You ll read the different alternatives for adding new elements to such an array in the next section.

Invented in 1947, and made practical with the advent of the laser in the early 1960s, holography replaced the need for discrete perspective recording by providing a means to record and reconstruct actual wavefronts of light reflecting off of the surface of an object, by encoding those wavefronts through the physical phenomenon of interference The perspective information captured in the holographic process is nearly continuous, offering much higher fidelity 3-Dreproduction capability than that of integral photography Holography has limited utility, however, because the object or scene must remain utterly motionless during the recording process, lest the interference pattern be blurred and unresolvable In an effort to find a way to record holograms of living subjects and objects that cannot remain motionless for the duration of an exposure, hybrid approaches have been conceived, coupling the off-line parallax capture of integral photography with the encoding and optical capabilities inherent in holography.

This hybrid has been termed holographic stereography A number of early holographic stereogram techniques were proposed and demonstrated, notably those of Pole, DeBitetto, and RedmaniV9VVi the simplest form, a holographic stereogram is creIn ated by sequentially projecting perspective views onto the recording plate with laser light, and recording a separate hologram of each, as illustrated in the figure in the margin The resultant multi-exposure hologram (termed angularly-multiplexed ) successfully reproduces a 3-D image, but the reduced diffraction efficiency resulting from many sequential exposures of the photosensitive medium produces dim results In other schemes, parallax information is captured, and then recorded on a segmented holographic emulsion through a combination of laser-light projection techniques and masking of the holographic plate- so-called spatially-multiplexed approaches In DeBitetto s method, diagrammed in the next figure, a plate is recorded with vertical strip holograms, each containing a different discrete perspective of the scene.
